Indoor tracking: the common questions.

Short answers. Each links back to a longer explanation elsewhere in this guide.

The basics.

What is indoor tracking?

Locating people, stock or equipment inside a building, where GPS does not work, by means of radio devices installed in the building.

How is it different from GPS tracking?

GPS works from satellites and needs open sky. Indoor tracking works from tags and fixed devices inside the building and needs no satellite signal at all.

Does it work on more than one floor?

Yes. Each floor has its own plan, and a tag is shown on the floor it is on.

Does every tag need a SIM card?

No. Tags talk to the devices in the building. Only the gateway connects to the internet, over the site's Wi-Fi.

Choosing.

What is the difference between mesh, BLE and RFID?

A mesh gives a continuous position inside a building. A BLE beacon is heard by a vehicle or a yard listener, which tells you who has the item and where it was left. An RFID label is read when it passes a reader, which records where and when it was seen.

Can a site use more than one?

Yes, and many do: a mesh on the warehouse floor and beacons on the trailers outside, for example. On Trackerserver they appear in one account.

Is RFID available now?

InSight RFID is in its final testing. Early access is available on request.

Starting.

What hardware is needed for a mesh?

Teltonika EYE Beacon Mesh or EYE Sensor Mesh tags, Mesh Anchors on the building and a Mesh Gateway Wi-Fi.

Do we need accurate drawings?

No. An image of each floor is enough. The walls are traced over it in the platform.

How do we begin?

Send an enquiry with a description of the building and what you want to find in it.

Ready to offer indoor tracking?

Describe the building and what has to be found in it. We reply with the technology that fits, the hardware it takes and the platform that shows it.
